The Client

The Client

The client is the Government of South Africa, and the client site were the individual houses in Senegal. The government had provided several subsidies to its people to setup roof top solar panels, to decrease the load on power generation.

The Objective

The residents had installed solar power generation source at their homes. The South African Government had also supported residents for the same with an intention to reduce the load of power generation of Power Grids and to use the natural / renewable energy sources as much as possible.

After successful implementation of solar panels, the government found that users were not using the renewable power source effectively. So, the problem of unnecessary load on the power grids continued.

To use this renewable energy more effectively, the South African Government was looking at automating the switching of the power sources in different use case scenarios, with the added ability to monitor this power consumption remotely.

The Objective

The HIPL Edge

  • With the use of Industrial IoT, HIPL provided bi-directional smart energy meters to measure both solar power and power grid energy and monitor the solar power battery.
  • The IoT technology enabled battery monitoring system resulted in automatic switching of power input. On full charge the power source automatically switches to solar power.
  • Consumers can set up threshold values for the battery. On reaching this threshold, the energy source automatically switched to grid power.

The Outcome

  • IoT technology enabled maximum use of renewable sources of energy
  • Industrial IoT reduces load on power grids by promoting sustainability and renewable sources of energy.
  • Reduced energy bills for consumers.
